Sorry Messages for Your Girlfriend

12 August 2026 Β· 6 min read

Before the list, one thing worth saying plainly: a message cannot do the work of changed behaviour. If this is the third apology for the same thing, no wording will fix it. But when you genuinely mean it and the words will not come, a starting point helps. These are sorted by situation, because the right message for a small mistake is very different from the right one after a serious fight.

Short apologies (for something small)

  • I was wrong and I knew it about ten minutes in. I am sorry.
  • That was unfair of me. I am sorry.
  • I snapped at you and you did not deserve it. Sorry.
  • You were right. I have been sitting with that all afternoon. I am sorry.
  • I let you down today. I am not going to make excuses about it.
  • Sorry. Properly sorry, not the quick kind.
  • I hate how I spoke to you. I am sorry.

After a serious fight

  • β€œI have been replaying what I said and I feel sick about it. You did not deserve any of it, and I am not going to defend myself. I am sorry.”
  • β€œI know sorry does not undo it. I am saying it anyway, and then I am going to show you rather than tell you.”
  • β€œYou have been telling me this for a while and I did not listen properly until now. That is on me. I am sorry.”
  • β€œI care more about us being okay than about being right, and I lost sight of that completely. I am sorry.”
  • β€œI made you feel small. That is the part I cannot get past. I am so sorry.”
  • β€œThere is no version of this where I am not in the wrong. I am not going to argue any part of it. I am sorry.”

When she is not replying

Send one message, not seven. A stream of texts moves the pressure onto her to manage your anxiety, which makes it harder for her to come back.

  • β€œI am not going to keep messaging. I just want you to know I understand why you are angry, and I am here when you are ready.”
  • β€œTake whatever time you need. I am not going anywhere, and I am sorry.”
  • β€œI will stop texting now. One thing before I do: you were right, and I am sorry.”

Longer messages

  • β€œI have been trying to write this all day. The truth is I was defensive because I knew you had a point, and instead of admitting it I made it your problem. That was cowardly. I am sorry, and I am going to be better at hearing you.”
  • β€œYou have never once made me feel stupid for being wrong. I did not give you the same, and that is what I am most sorry about.”
  • β€œI do not want you to forgive me quickly just to end the discomfort. Take your time. I will still be sorry tomorrow.”

What makes an apology actually work

  • Name the specific thing. Vagueness reads as dodging.
  • No β€œbut”. The word deletes everything before it.
  • Show you understand how it landed for her, not just that she is upset.
  • Say what you will do differently β€” concretely, not β€œI will be better”.
  • Then stop. Do not ask for forgiveness in the same breath.

Never send these

  • β€œI am sorry you felt that way.” This apologises for her feelings, not your actions.
  • β€œI already said sorry.”
  • β€œYou do that too.” True or not, it belongs in a separate conversation on a different day.
  • β€œI am the worst, I do not deserve you.” This asks her to comfort you mid-apology.

If a text is not enough

For anything that has been going on more than a day, a message in a chat thread is easy to skim past while still angry. An interactive sorry card gives your words a slower entrance β€” it opens on her phone one line at a time, ending on your full letter, and you can add a voice note. It does not replace the conversation, but it does tend to get read to the end.
