First Anniversary Ideas

11 September 2026 ยท 6 min read

The first anniversary carries a slightly awkward pressure: it should feel significant, but you are also one year in, probably still recovering financially from the wedding, and unsure what the tradition is meant to be. Here is a practical way through it.

The paper tradition, and why it is actually good

Year one is traditionally paper. This sounds like a constraint that leaves you buying stationery, but read it differently: paper means written, and written is exactly the right register for a first anniversary. The thing you will still have in thirty years is not a gift, it is words.

  • A letter. The obvious one, and consistently the most kept. One page, specific, honest.
  • Your vows, printed properly and framed. Almost nobody does this and almost everybody wishes they had.
  • Tickets to something with a date on it โ€” paper, and also a plan.
  • A photo book of year one. The first year has the most photos and the least organisation.
  • A map or print of where you met, married, or first lived.
  • A letter to be opened on your tenth anniversary, sealed now. Write one each and put them away.

That last one is the best idea on the list

Write a letter each, describing where you are now โ€” the flat, the jobs, the worries, what you hope. Seal them and agree not to open them until year ten. It costs nothing, takes an evening, and creates something genuinely irreplaceable. Couples who do this almost universally say it became their favourite tradition.

Celebrating at home

  • Recreate the wedding meal, or the first meal you ever ate together.
  • Watch the wedding video properly, from start to finish, which most couples have never done.
  • Order the cake flavour you had at the wedding.
  • Write down the five best things about year one, separately, then swap.

Going out

  • Return to where you met. The bar, the campus, the office lobby.
  • Go back to the venue, if you can. Many will let you walk the grounds.
  • A night somewhere new, on the principle that year one should start the habit of going places together.

If you are apart

Postings, visas and jobs separate plenty of couples in year one. An anniversary experience lets you send the whole thing as a link โ€” your photos from the year, a love meter, and your letter at the end, opened on their phone wherever they are. Schedule it to unlock at midnight in their timezone.

What actually makes year one memorable

Two things, consistently. First, writing something down โ€” because year one is the last point at which you remember the details of how it all started. Second, starting a tradition you will repeat: the same restaurant, the same photo pose, the same question asked every year. Traditions are only valuable because they accumulate, so the value comes entirely from starting one now.

A note on spending

Most couples are still financially recovering from the wedding at year one, and there is no requirement to mark it expensively. The paper tradition is, conveniently, the cheapest one in the whole sequence.
