How to write one that passes the test

Replace every abstraction with a fact.

Instead of “you are always there for me”, write “you drove to the hospital at 2am in February and did not once mention how tired you were the next day”. Instead of “you make me happy”, write “you make me laugh at least twice before breakfast, which I did not know was possible for me”.

Specific detail is the only thing that proves you were paying attention — which is what an anniversary message is really for.

Make it something she keeps

An anniversary experience puts your message at the end of a walk through your photos and your years together, as a link she can reopen whenever she wants. Add a voice note — recorded messages get replayed far more than written ones do.
