14 Anniversary Ideas at Home

25 September 2026 ยท 6 min read

Restaurant anniversaries have a hidden flaw: you spend the evening in a loud room being interrupted every eight minutes, and then you go home. Home anniversaries are cheaper and, done with any thought at all, considerably more intimate.

Setting it apart from a normal evening

The whole challenge of a home anniversary is that home is where you already are. Three things reliably change the register: no phones, different lighting, and eating somewhere you do not usually eat. That is genuinely most of it.

Fourteen ideas

1. Cook the meal from your first date. Badly is fine. The reference is the point.

2. Eat on the floor, the balcony, or the terrace. A different surface makes it a different evening.

3. Write each other a letter and read them at the table. Ten minutes to write, and it is the part you will both remember.

4. Print this yearโ€™s photos. Actual prints, laid out on the table. Going through them is an hour of conversation that requires no planning.

5. Watch the wedding video. A remarkable number of couples have watched theirs precisely once.

6. Make a shared list of the year. Best day, worst day, funniest thing, one thing to do differently. Do it separately, then compare.

7. Recreate a date you cannot do anymore. The student-budget one, the pre-kids one.

8. Send them an anniversary link during the day. An anniversary experience with your photos and a letter, sent at lunchtime, sets the tone hours before the evening starts.

9. A photo puzzle over dinner. A photo puzzle of a picture from the year, with your message behind it.

10. Cook together rather than one person surprising the other. Two glasses, one recipe neither has attempted.

11. The interview. Ask each other ten questions you have never asked. There are lists online; the specific questions matter less than the format.

12. Write next yearโ€™s letters and seal them. Open them next anniversary. Start it once and it becomes the tradition.

13. Recreate the wedding playlist. Nothing relocates you to a specific day faster than the music from it.

14. Go to bed early with the phones in another room. Unglamorous and frequently the correct answer.

If you have small children

The honest constraint here is that you will get about ninety minutes after bedtime and you will both be tired. Plan for that rather than against it.

  • Do it on a weekday. Weekend evenings are more chaotic, not less.
  • Eat something that requires no cooking. Effort spent on the meal is effort not spent on each other.
  • Do the letter exchange. It works in fifteen minutes and survives interruption.
  • Do not aim for a whole evening. One good hour is a success.
  • Consider a lunch instead, if anyone can take the children for two hours.

If you are both exhausted

Move it. An anniversary observed badly out of obligation is worse than one moved to the following Saturday with genuine attention. The date is symbolic; the attention is the actual gift.
